GameStop — Shares in the video game retailer soared more than 65% on Monday after "Roaring Kitty," the man who fueled the 2021 GameStop mania, posted online on Reddit for the first time in roughly three years. Reddit , Robinhood — Shares of the two companies that were involved with the meme stock mania in 2021 rose on Monday as GameStop surged. Reddit rose more than 9%, hitting its highest level since March, while retail brokerage stock Robinhood gained about 6.2%. Intel — The chipmaker gained nearly 4% after The Wall Street Journal reported that it is in talks for an $11 billion deal with Apollo Global Management to build a factory in Ireland. Icahn paid an average of $3.56 a share for his 33.6 million shares of the stock, according to the filing. Shares of JetBlue closed Monday at $6.07 a share before leaping to nearly $7 a share in morning trading. His purchases started on January 26, a week after a federal court blocked JetBlue’s proposed purchase of Spirit Airlines. Analysts had suggested that JetBlue was only interested in pursuing the deal, assuming it was allowed by the court, at a significantly lower price. JetBlue had been interested in buying Spirit as a way of getting both the aircraft and pilots it needs to expand.

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked JetBlue Airways’ proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit Airlines, a victory for the Department of Justice, which argued that the deal would harm travelers. The proposed merger would have created the nation’s fifth-largest airline. The Justice Department had argued that smaller, low-cost airlines like Spirit help reduce fares and that allowing the company to be acquired by JetBlue, which tends to charge higher prices than Spirit, would have hurt consumers. The four largest U.S. airlines — American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines — control about two-thirds of the market. The merger would have given JetBlue a market share of 10 percent, still shy of United, the fourth-largest U.S. airline, which has 16 percent.

New York CNN —Spirit Airlines shares tanked 52% on Tuesday after a federal judge in Boston ruled against JetBlue’s proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of the discount airline. The Biden administration has argued since taking office there needs to be greater competition between businesses, especially in the airline industry, to lower costs for consumers. “If not blocked, the merger of JetBlue and Spirit would result in higher fares and fewer choices for tens of millions of travelers across the country. The Biden administration has taken a much more aggressive approach in fighting mergers and combinations, including in the airline industry. There is one other merger now being sought in the US airline industry, a proposed $1.9 billion deal to combine Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.

DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines posted a $545 million loss for the third quarter as revenue was flat with last summer and costs rose, especially to cover a new contract with its pilots. American Airlines Group Inc., based in Fort Worth, said earnings excluding special items worked out to 38 cents per share. Labor costs at American jumped 17%, an increase of nearly $600 million, which was roughly offset by lower fuel prices than a year ago. There are already concerns over rising costs for airlines as fuel prices surge at the same time that travel has begun to slow. Fuel prices are still lower than they were last year, but the loss at American could add to anxiety over burdensome costs across the industry.
